Retirement Nestegg Report May 2017

Retirement Nestegg Report May 2017

Starting to sound like a broken record, but another month of all time nestegg highs and another month of investment performance that greatly exceeded the market. Obviously this can’t go on forever and eventually Tesla may slow down its meteoric climb for a bit, but in the meantime I guess I’m not complaining since I am not really contributing anything of significance to my nest egg so the crazy new highs every month aren’t causing me any anxiety due to me having to make purchases.

It looks like one more 2% month and I will crack the $800k barrier just 5 months after breaking the $700k barrier

Retirement Nestegg Report April 2017

Retirement Nestegg Report April 2017

Well another record setting month for my retirement nestegg. An all-time new high that is almost $30,000 higher than last month’s total. My portfolio performance greatly outperformed the market as a whole and my hypothetical safe withdrawal rate from my nestegg broke through the $30,000 a year threshold. I did also have a larger than normal 401k contribution due to my annual bonus hitting this month as well, but with the size of my nestegg the real performance comes from the nestegg itself and the contributions themselves these days are hard to move the needle much.

I don’t expect this type of performance to continue – I mean I’m only 3 months removed from breaking through the $700,000 milestone and am now closer to the $800k mark. A large part of my growth and out-performance has come from my individual stocks with large holdings like Tesla really picking up steam as of late. There will for sure be some volatility with my individual stocks, but long term I feel pretty good about them.

I also think I have sort of passed a weird psychological threshold. Normally I’m usually more bummed about the market going up and cheering on for the next crash, but given like I said above that my contributions make less of a dent these days and how to be honest I see my retirement savings starting to wane some going forward here I guess I’m fine with the markets reaching new highs as it means my date to financial independence keeps moving closer and closer. Just a random self reflective observation. Guess that means I’m getting old now and this far fetched retirement date sometime long in the future is probably not as far off as it once was.

That being said I have some work to do yet as I have five kids and a brand new large mortgage so I probably have a higher burden than some folks on the financial independence journey, but knowing that I have 3/4 of a million dollars tucked away working hard for me makes it easier to put less of an emphasis on worrying about my career or salary or having to put massive amounts of money away. Those things are still important, but not even remotely close as important as they were 10 years ago. The heavy lifting has been done and now I have more options – which hopefully I will have the courage to take advantage of in the coming years.

Retirement Nestegg Report March 2017

Retirement Nestegg Report March 2017

Another record high for me this month and despite very flat performance by the market as a whole, but my individual stock performance greatly exceeded the market this month, which is good because overall they haven’t been too hot the last year or more. Compounding is still cool and big numbers keep getting bigger. Look forward to this trend continuing.

Retirement Nestegg Report January 2017

Well another new year and another new high for my nestegg and the best part is this time it was actually my portfolio doing the work. My investments soundly trounced the market this month after falling behind most of last year. Let’s hope this trend continues.

Interim Retirement Nestegg Report – I broke $700,000

Interim Retirement Nestegg Report – I broke $700,000

Well this is more like it. Only 5 months after surpassing the $600k mark I have now surpassed the $700k mark. Part of this is cheating due to the fact that I now include some private stock that was not previously included in my 600k report, but I will take it. It is also interesting that the DOW broke 20,000 for the first time today and the first time I broke $100,000 the DOW was at 10,000 so while the DOW has doubled in size my retirement nestegg has septupled in size. Given the size of my nestegg and the size of my contributions I should now expect to be breaking threw new $100k barriers at least once a year in up years going forward and it will only get easier from there.

My Best and Worst Stocks In 2016

My Best and Worst Stocks In 2016

Here are my best performing stocks for 2016. As with my portfolio in general no real fireworks this year. No individual stock doubled this year and in general my bigger winners were smaller positions in my portfolio so their impact wasn’t felt as much. As with most stocks I own I feel really good about this bunch of winners and expect most of them to make the big winner list in the future. 3D systems has made the biggest winners or losers list every single year since I purchased it in 2012. Up huge in 2012(+90.40%) and 2013(+172.91%), down huge in 2014(-63.79%) and 2015(-73.63%), and now on the winners list in 2016(+52.93%). Unfortunately for me that adds up to -61% returns for me on 3D Systems 🙁

Shopify +66.15%
3D Systems Corp + 52.93%
BOFI Holding +35.63%
Texas Roadhouse +34.85%
Brookfield Infrastructure Partners +32.36%
Arista Networks + 24.32%
Berkshire Hathaway +23.48%

My worst performers this year include some of my largest positions and favorite stocks and also explains why my stock portfolio so greatly under performed the market in 2016. Under Armour led the way with nearly a 40% drop in value in 2016. I consider Under Armour a great company and a company that will one day surpass Nike in size which would mean outsized gains for me and my portfolio. Stratasys and Proto Labs are part of the 3D printer craze and with 3D Systems are probably companies who have an uncertain future, but for now I will let things play out. Chipotle has fallen on hard times after a Norovirus scare at a couple of their location. Yes they have been hurt in the short term and have some hurdles to overcome, but it is a great company with food that people love and will rebound in the years to come. Tesla is currently nearly my largest stock holding with it and Netflix flipping back and forth. Overall I feel that Tesla over the next 10 years will make me quite wealthy and make the world a better place in the process and is one company I have invested more in than any other company by far. The next few years should be exciting for that position.

Under Armour -39.35%
Stratasys -29.55%
Chipotle Mexican Grill -21.32%
Proto Labs – 19.37%
The Boston Beer Company -15.88%
Tesla -10.97%
