Yeah if you start working out an hourly rate for all the time you spend researching it can get kind of ugly, so yeah sometimes there is a point where not worrying about prices actually saves you money, but so many times having that extra knowledge pays off in more than one area and yeah not every research project is going to pay off in terms of bang for your buck when it comes to general knowledge, nothing ticks me off more than jumping the gun on a purchase on not being happy with the end product. In that case you either have something you don't like or you need to make another purchase to fill the original need....but anyway I digress....thanks for the comment!

$225 isn't much, and although you already know this I think, I would say that you're at the point where a small investment has a big effect and is thus worth it.

As for the difference in career versus cutting corners, I recently had an example of this too. I was buying something on ebay worth about $100-$150. I spent about 20+ hours researching all the different brands, comparing prices, doing a lot of analysis. In the end I got a bit tired of it and ended up just buying one for about $130 (closing out the auction). Although some of the research on the item was worth it in terms of general knowledge, I was aware of the fact that about ten of those hours at least was basically spent working for about $0.25 an hour.

I think you've got a point. I recently did the same thing, and found that it really did change the way people acted toward me.
