I got a promotion!!

I got a promotion!!

Well I have only been at my new employer for just barely 5 months, but yesterday I got called into the CFO’s office and was told that I would be getting a promotion and a 10% raise. My previous manager decided to leave the company and this opened up an opportunity for me. I never applied for the position and in fact didn’t even know if this position was being replaced, so I was quite suprised to hear about my promotion.

Clothes as an investment??

Clothes as an investment??

Today I went clothes shopping. I bought a lot of new clothes. In fact I spent more money on clothes today than I probably have in the last seven years combined. Now to put that in perspective I can only think of one piece of clothing I have bought in the last 5 years or so (a pair of jeans last year) and well I really only spent $225 today, which for some people may be a casual shopping trip. I never buy clothes, in fact a majority of my wardrobe consists of clothes I wore when I was still in high school. The rest are clothes I’ve received for birthday and Christmas presents from friends and family or received as freebies through work or conferences.

My first day at new job

My first day at new job

Well today is my first day at my new employer. It was easy finding jobs, but is was difficult deciding which job was the best for me (as you can tell if you’ve followed my blog this month). Anyway today is a new start for me and hopefully puts me a couple steps closer to meeting my financial goals and needs. In fact in the near future I’m probably going to have to revisit my original financial goals as I’m afraid it’s just going to be too easy for me to reach my current set of goals due to the fact that I’m making more money now and well will be stuck contributing to a traditional 401k instead of a Roth 401k so I’ll be contributing a lot more principal now and won’t necessarily be better off for it.

Regardless I think today is a good day for me and hopefully a couple years down the road I’ll look back on this and decide a I made a wise decision.

Cheaper Health Insurance on your own?

Cheaper Health Insurance on your own?

I have pretty good health insurance now that I switched jobs, but my previous employer’s health insurance benefits were degrading pretty rapidly and because they are such a small company I can see them continuing down that road.  While talking to one of my buddies at the old company he showed me this site where you can go out and get quotes on various health insurance plans on your own.  For those wondering the site is www.ehealthinsurance.com

I resigned

I resigned

Well I went into my HR department yesterday and asked them if I had ever signed a non-compete agreement. She looked through my file and said yes you signed this. I got a copy of what she gave me and turns out it was just a confidentiality agreement that basically said I would not divulge our and our customer’s trade secrets. To make matters even better the agreement is suppose to have my name on the front page and it is just left blank. It does have my signature on the last page, but seeing as how it is suppose to be an agreement between me and the company it requires the owner’s signature also – which happens to be blank.

Job Dilema – Update 2

Job Dilema – Update 2

Sorry for spending too much time on my job search, but I think this will be of value to me down the road to evaluate this decision and well it very much effects my financial situation and retirement goals.  In fact it may somewhat ruin my goals as they may become too easy…again not worst problem in the world.

Well if you have been following my blog lately you know that I have quite a few options available to me.  I have actually turned down Company 1 and a few other opportunities have presented me since my previous posts.  One of those opportunities is with a client that I have been consulting at for the last 1.5 years and while base salary wise it is not the highest of the bunch, the total compensation bonuses/401k matching/pension/health insurance takes it pretty much to the top.  Add in the fact that it is 18 minutes from my home, has very flexible and light hours, and I would be able to use the latest and greatest technology and it is pretty much by far the place I want to work at.
